What a specific cold plunge costs to run, whether ice or a chiller is the wiser path, and what five years of ownership honestly add up to.

IMonthly Electricity Cost

The largest recurring cost of a powered cold plunge, estimated from the chiller's draw and how long it actually runs.

Monthly cost = (watts ÷ 1,000) × chiller run hours per day × 30.4 days per month × rate per kWh

Marketed chiller HP is nominal, converted here at 1 HP = 746 W. Entering the unit's exact rated watts gives the most accurate result.

Run time, not session length. This is the biggest unknown: an insulated indoor tub may run 3 to 4 hours, a thin-walled outdoor tub 12 or more.

Defaults to the US average of $0.1883 per kWh (EIA, April 2026). Selecting a state fills in its average residential rate; entering a utility rate directly is more precise, and always wins.

ESTIMATED RUNNING COST

About $15 per month

Rated watts and HP describe the compressor's power draw, not how efficiently a given unit turns that power into cold water. Real running cost also depends on cooling efficiency, chiefly how well the heat exchanger moves heat out of the water, which sets how many hours the chiller must run to hold temperature. Two chillers of the same wattage can therefore cost different amounts to run. Treat the result as an estimate.

IIIce or a Chiller

Re-chilling with bagged ice against buying a chiller, and how long the powered path takes to pay for itself. Both paths pay for a tub; the question is what cools it. The ice model is approximate, by simple physics: a full re-cool of a 100-gallon cold plunge by 20°F takes about 103 lb of ice, closer to 154 lb from a warm-summer start.

ICE APPROACH

Full re-cool suits an unpowered or thin-walled tub that warms fully between sessions. A disciplined top-up, about one bag per session, suits an insulated tub.

Bagged ice typically runs $0.23 to $0.31 per lb.

THE POWERED PRICE BELOW IS

A standalone chiller joins the same tub the ice path uses. A complete powered system includes its own tub, so the ice-path tub price is credited against it.

Defaults to $1,950 for a standalone chiller; replacement chillers are documented at $1,899 to $3,999. Tier figures are illustrative complete-system midpoints of documented ranges; when one is selected, mark the price as a complete system above.

UPKEEP AND TIME, BOTH PATHS

Ice is not the ice path's only running cost. With no filtration, the water itself must go: published maintenance guidance is a full drain and refill every 3 to 5 days. A filtered, powered setup stretches the same chore to weeks or months, but carries consumables instead.

Documented guidance for an unfiltered tub is every 3 to 5 days, sooner with shared or outdoor use.

With filtration and sanitization, documented guidance runs from every 2 to 3 weeks to every few months.

A 100-gallon fill costs about $1.00 to $1.75.

Documented treatment costs run a few dollars to $20 per month; a frequently drained tub sits at the low end.

Filtration and water treatment for a powered setup: generic runs $150 to $300 per year; the branded-kit path is about $306.

Payback depends on the habit a person will actually keep. A schedule that thins to occasional sessions stretches every payback figure above, and a heavier one shortens them.

IIIThe Five-Year Total

An honest all-in estimate for a chosen ownership path, with the ice path and the powered path then set side by side, and repair exposure held out in the open rather than folded away.

Both lines are built from Module II's inputs: the tub, sessions per week, the ice approach, both upkeep cadences, and, only if priced there, time.

Possible repair, held separate: out-of-warranty sealed-system repair is documented at $800 to $2,400, with no reliable data on how often it occurs. It is deliberately not folded into the total above.

Worth knowing alongside the total: chiller warranty is one year at almost every price point, with Blue Cube's 3-year residential coverage a rare exception; a replacement chiller runs $1,899 to $3,999; and a dedicated GFCI circuit, if one is not already present, is roughly $250 to $900 to install, with about $650 typical.

Every output on this page is an estimate, not a quote. Every runtime and duty-cycle figure in this category is vendor-sourced; no published, independent, metered duty-cycle data is readily available. The ice arithmetic is approximate, by simple physics. Electricity rates are average residential prices from the US Energy Information Administration's Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.A (April 2026 data); an actual utility bill is the better source where available.
