IRunning Cost
What a session costs at the entered heater, habit, and electricity rate. Preheat counts the heater at full draw; time at temperature counts it at a duty cycle, because a heater at temperature cycles rather than runs flat out.
Session energy = heater kW × preheat hours at full draw + heater kW × session hours × duty cycle. Cost per session = session energy × rate per kWh.
The rating is the heater's draw at full output, from the spec sheet. Traditional sizes follow the documented 4.5 to 9 kW residential spread; choosing a size also sets a fitting preheat and duty cycle, both editable.
Time in the heat, at temperature. Preheat is counted separately below.
A properly sized traditional room reaches temperature in a documented 30 to 45 minutes, and the stones saturate more slowly: about 50 minutes typically, 45 to 60 with a heavy stone load, and up to 90 in a cold climate or with an undersized heater. Infrared warms in about 10 to 20 minutes. Preheat counts the heater at full draw.
An assumption, not a measurement. Once a traditional room is at temperature the heater cycles, roughly half on and half off; infrared panels run at or near full output for the length of a session, so 100 is the honest figure there.
Documented composites: infrared 0.75 to 1.5 kWh per 30-minute session; traditional 3 to 4.5 kWh per 30 minutes at temperature; a traditional full evening including preheat, 6.6 to 13.3 kWh, is derived from the ownership article's $1.25 to $2.50 per session at the US average rate, not metered.
The habit, not the hardware, sets this number.
Defaults to the US average of $0.1883 per kWh (EIA, April 2026). Selecting a state fills in its average residential rate; entering a utility rate directly is more precise, and always wins.
ESTIMATED RUNNING COST
About $0.85 per session
Rated kW describes the heater's draw, not the room's real consumption. Insulation, room volume, glass and stone mass, ventilation, climate, and the duty cycle all move the figure; the documented rule of thumb is roughly 1 kW of heater per cubic meter of room, more with glass or masonry. Session-energy composites are vendor-published or cost-guide figures, with no independent metered data readily available. IIThe Five-Year Total
An honest all-in estimate for the path being considered, with nothing folded away and repair exposure held out in the open. The monthly energy figure carries down from Module I's running cost; entering a figure directly always wins, and choosing a path again restores it.

FIVE-YEAR TOTAL, ESTIMATED
Time is not priced into this total; the time costs of ownership appear in Module III, and join the dollar figures there only when an hourly value is set.
Heater exposure, traditional, held separate: heater elements carry a one-year warranty at almost every price point, even where the room carries lifetime language. Replacement elements are documented at $110 to $230 in parts, and heater repair or replacement service at $200 to $600. There is no reliable data on how often it occurs, so it is deliberately not folded into the total above.
Electronics exposure, infrared, held separate: panels, boards, and controls fail like appliances and can depend on proprietary parts. Replacement heating panels are documented at $80 to $250 each in parts, roughly $175 to $500 installed, and controller replacement at $150 to $400 in parts, roughly $225 to $700 installed. Held out of the total for the same reason.
Worth knowing alongside the total: freight-damage claims run on windows as short as 72 hours and turn on photographs taken before signing; "white glove" is not a standard and must be confirmed in writing; self-installed electrical can void the warranty, and HUUM and Harvia say so outright; heavy outdoor models run 870 to 1,270 lb, and a deck needs its capacity verified before the crate arrives. IIITraditional Against Infrared
For the buyer still weighing the category's real fork: both paths priced side by side at the usage and rate entered in Module I. Neither path retires the other, so there is no payback to compute; the honest output is what each asks upfront, each month, and over five years. Prefab rooms are documented at $5,500 to $8,000, outdoor barrels and cabins at $7,000 to $25,000 and beyond. Custom builds are documented only as passing $20,000, so no figure is pre-filled; enter the quote directly.
One-to-two-person cabins are documented at $1,500 to $4,000; larger and full-spectrum models at $4,000 to $10,000.

UPKEEP AND TIME, BOTH PATHS
Money is not the only running cost. The durations below are user-set assumptions, not measurements; no published data on the minutes this habit takes appears to exist. The preheat wait is real time even when the buyer does something else, so it is counted as minutes committed before the heat.
An assumption, matched to Module I's preheat default. Documented heat-up runs 30 to 45 minutes to temperature, and full stone saturation can take up to 90; set the wait actually kept.

TRADITIONAL AGAINST INFRARED
The running-cost difference above is real, but it is rarely the deciding number. The decisive questions are which heat will actually be used and which room the home can hold. The utility bill follows that choice. It should not make it.

Every output on this page is an estimate, not a quote. Session-energy figures are vendor-published or cost-guide composites; no independent metered per-session data is readily available. The duty-cycle figure is an assumption, and the preheat and chore durations are user-set assumptions with no published data behind them. Electricity rates are average residential prices from the US Energy Information Administration's Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.A (April 2026 data); an actual utility bill is the better source where available.
